As an engaged auto owner, you can periodically check your vehicle's battery at home. At the Gillman Nissan Fort Bend facility in Rosenberg, we test modern batteries with electronic multimeters. You can buy a multimeter online for under $20.
Before you test your battery, set your multimeter's DC dial to 20 volts. Next, check your battery's metal terminals for corrosion. Excess corrosion should be removed with a terminal brush. Also, you should turn on your headlights for a couple of minutes before testing the battery. Doing this without running your engine will use your battery's surface charge and ensure a true reading.
Next, you will see a positive probe and a negative probe on your multimeter. Attach each one to its corresponding terminal on your vehicle's battery. You will soon see a reading on your multimeter's display. A sufficiently charged battery will register a reading of 12.0 volts or higher.
