When the high waters made many roads undrivable, drivers were forced to abandon their cars to reach safety. Even parked cars may have received damage from high floodwaters.
Gillman Nissan in Rosenberg has compiled some information and advice for drivers who may be dealing with a flooded or water damaged car in the Houston area:
Locate your abandoned car if it was towed by the City of Houston at http://findmytowedcar.com/ using your license plate number or VIN
Do not try to start the car. If there is water in the engine, an attempt to start the car could result in irreparable damage.
Document the damage by taking pictures and videos. This could later ease the claims process with your insurance company.
File your insurance claim promptly to begin the repair and/or replacement process. Many insurance companies currently have extra adjustors to deal with the influx of claims, so it’s a good idea to file your claim now.
Begin to dry the interior of your car to prevent mold and mildew from growing. Pull out carpets and floor mats, open doors and windows and use towels to soak up excess water.
Set up an appointment with your mechanic to have the engine, electrical and mechanical components of your car checked.
